The film, "Free Guy," takes place, for the most part, inside a massively multiplayer online (MMO) game called "Free City."
This MMO has a large number of players interact with each other on the same server. Inside the game, there are NPCs which are called non-player characters.
Guy is an NPC. He is supposed to be a simple bank teller but becomes self-aware. He realizes that he is an NPC in a bloodthirsty video game. In hopes of being able to share a mission with his "one love," he decides to become a hero (vs. the normal gamer villain). This way, he can "level up" past level 100.
After successfully doing good and making it past level 100, he returns to the bank he works at to talk with his best friend, Buddy.
Since Guy know understands what is happening, he wants to help his friend Buddy.
We see that the bank was repeated robbed in the movie. It was part of Guy's and Buddy's natural day. We know that the bank was robbed daily, at least at 2:30 and 4:00. In the scene when Guy was explaining about becoming free and have a fuller life via the sunglasses, a literal thief (aka bank robber) entered into the bank.
As Guy explains that he talked with his "one love," Buddy asks, "The one with the sunglasses?"
Guy explains that he is now one of the sunglass people and says to Buddy, "What if I could tell you that you could be more? Your life could be fuller. That you’re free to make your own decisions. Your own choices."
Guy continues, "Life doesn’t have to be something that just happens to us. All right? Just put the glasses on and you’re gonna see. You’re gonna see. Come on.
Sadly, Buddy replies, "I can’t, okay? I’m sorry."
Awakening To The "Real World"
In Ephesians 6:12 (KJV) we read, "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."
When Guy put on those sunglasses, he was able to see "spiritual battles" that were taking place.
The NPC did not know what really was happening.
Guy is like the person who becomes saved and realizes that God has great things in store for him to do.
Ephesians 2:10 "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."
Buddy is like the seed on the path. Buddy heard what he needed to do, put on the sunglasses, but he didn't accept the sunglasses and turned away sad.
That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat down. And the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear."
~Matthew 13:1-9
Seeing The World As It Truly Is
For Guy and other NPCs, they did not realize they were in a video game. They just went about their "lives" as if getting robbed, shot at, and experiencing horrific events was how life was.
For non-believers, they see the world "as if" and not how it truly is.
Without hope and faith in Jesus, they are unable to truly enjoy life and see that regardless of what happens, there is a way to make it through.
In John 16:33 Jesus is talking to His disciples. He tells them, " I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." (emphasis added)
When we are in Christ, we will not be choked out by the cares of this world. We will be able to overcome them.
James 1:2-4 tells us, "Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing."
What if I could tell you that you could be more? Your life could be fuller.

Movie Rating and Review
The Motion Picture Association gave this movie a rating of PG-13 for strong fantasy violence throughout, language and crude/suggestive references.
As a Christian, there certainly portions of this movie that are the opposite of Philippians 4:8 where Paul tells us, "Finally, brothers [and sisters], whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things."
I am aware that some of my fellow believers may not watch this film in its entirety. Hopefully, the scene and quote used in this devotional post allows someone to hear a non-believer make reference to this movie or quote and you, my fellow believer, can then use this devotional to bring in the Biblical truth this devotional shares.

My Review
I give this movie a thumbs up and 4 stars.
As with most Ryan Reynolds movies, this has language and humor that crosses the lines once or twice. The concept of an NPC being self-aware and fighting for good is freshing.
