The pompous and evil Emperor Commodus heads down to the Colosseum to meet the "Spaniard" gladiator who has risen to fame and respect because of his deeds inside the area.
Refusing to tell the Emperor his real name, the "Spaniard" turns to walk back and join the other gladiators.
A deeply offended Commodus yells out, "How dare you show your back to me! Slave, you will remove your helmet and tell me your name."
Having failed to kill the Emperor with a severed arrow head because his nephew, Lucius was standing in front of him, Maximus slowly removes helmet and turns around to face the Emperor.
Standing firm before his enemy, the "Spaniard" declares, "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the TRUE emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."
The Emperor is scared and worried because in an instant, the "Spaniard" turned from being a lowly gladiator into a stalwart warrior.
By declaring who he was, Maximus regained himself and drew strength from it.

Movie Rating and Review
The Motion Picture Association gave this movie a rating of R for intense, graphic combat and violence.
As a Christian, there certainly portions of this movie that are the opposite of Philippians 4:8 where Paul tells us, "Finally, brothers [and sisters], whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things."
I am aware that some of my fellow believers may not watch this film in its entirety. Hopefully, the scene and quote used in this devotional post allows someone to hear a non-believer make reference to this movie or quote and you, my fellow believer, can then use this devotional to bring in the Biblical truth this devotional shares.

My Review
I give this movie a thumbs up and 5 stars.
Even today, the CGI for this film holds up. The story easily captures you and carries you through the ups and downs of a loyal general and loyal husband and father.
