Superman II: Take my hand, and swear eternal loyalty to Zod.

Far away from society, Superman is in his fortress of solitude, but he is not alone.

He is the prisoner of Zod and the other Kryptonians. Lois Lane is a captive as well and Lex Luther is trying his best to make his life easier.

In an effort to secure the safety of Earth from Zod, Superman enters the crystal chamber in order to give up his super powers.

After emerging from the chamber stooped over, Zod is relieved to finally be able to take his vengeance on Jor-El through his son Kal-El (a.k.a. Superman, a.k.a. Clark Kent).

Forcing Superman to kneel and pledge his eternal loyalty to Zod, Zod is unprepared for what happens next.

Take my hand, and swear eternal loyalty to Zod.

It is Zod and the other Kryptonians who have lost their powers.

Superman easily crushes Zod's hand and dispatches him and within the next few moments, the other two Kryptonians are no longer a threat.

What About Jesus?

Jesus is more that a super man. He is the Son of God, God Himself. He is part of the triune Godhead.

And yet, Jesus became human in order to lead a perfect life and die the death that would free all of humanity from the eternal penalty of sin.

Matthew 4:1-11 records the testing of Jesus in the wilderness.

After 40 days and nights Satan tempted Jesus with food and failed.

Satan then tested Jesus with throwing Himself off the height of the Temple so that the angels would rescue Jesus. But Satan failed.

The final test was recorded in Matthew 4:8-9, "Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, 'All these I will give You, if you will fall down and worship me.'"

As with the other two tests, Satan failed.

With each test, Satan used Scripture out of context to test Jesus.

In each instance, Jesus rebuke Satan with Scripture and obeyed God throughout.

Jesus came to earth because God so loved the world (John 3:16) that He knew that only through a perfect sacrifice could humanity be reconciled back to God.(Colossians 1:15-20)

Who or What Do We Kneel Before?

We all kneel before something or someone and have sworn are loyalty towards that activity, view point, desire, or person.

We need to be like Christ and only serve God.

Jesus warned us in Matthew 6:24 when He told us, "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money (or mammon)."

The decisions that we make and the lives we lead are evidence of who we are serving. The one that we serve is a decision that is made each day.

Jesus said in Luke 9:23, "If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me."

Make sure today that while we are still alive we make the choice to serve God. In Philippians 2:10-11 we are told "that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

Movie Rating and Review

The Motion Picture Association gave this movie a rating of PG.

PG Rated

As a Christian, there certainly portions of this movie that are the opposite of Philippians 4:8 where Paul tells us, "Finally, brothers [and sisters], whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things."

I am aware that some of my fellow believers may not watch this film in its entirety. Hopefully, the scene and quote used in this devotional post allows someone to hear a non-believer make reference to this movie or quote and you, my fellow believer, can then use this devotional to bring in the Biblical truth this devotional shares.

My Review

I give this movie a thumbs up and 4 stars.

For a film from 1981, the special effects are still respectable. The love story between Clark and Lois is a tad rushed. Having to deal with those with the same powers as he has, makes this a great challenge for Superman.
